Over 30 Local Authorities have been targeted across the Country to deliver Get into Football plans with the aim of raising football participation. This will be achieved through 3 years of funding for a full time, Football Development Officer in each of the targeted areas. Support for the project is from both Sport England and The FA.
With North West Leicestershire one of the target areas, Leicestershire & Rutland County FA in partnership with The FA and North West Leicestershire District Council have joined forces to make this project a reality and increase participation for those aged 16+ in North West Leicestershire.
The role of the Get into Football Officer will focus on increasing participation in football for both men and women aged 16 years and over within the district. The main aims of the role are to grow and retain current clubs, teams and players whilst also working to bring people back to the sport and encourage those who have never been involved in football to take part, as a player, coach or official. Development of all formats of football including, 11v11 recreational football, small sided and futsal will underpin the work and make the project a success.
Evidence shows a drop off in participation levels at 16+ with a loss of 2,867 11v11 adult teams nationally, since 05/06 season; it is for this reason that the Get into Football project has been put into place. To prevent these numbers from falling further, it is vital that football provision and opportunities are increased.
Support for the Get into Football programme is coming from Sport England, The FA, Leicestershire and Rutland County FA and North West Leicestershire. Alongside this comes backing from food giant, Mars. Mars are now backing adult football and are key partners in the growth and retention of adult football in England.
